I moved to Eau Claire from a very small town located in
central Wisconsin to pursue higher education. I came in as an undeclared
freshman, pursuing many different fields of study. Religious studies, history,
philosophy, sociology, all of these were fascinating areas of study that helped
broaden my knowledge as well as enhanced my understanding of many different
cultures. After taking Geography 178, Conservation of the Environment, I
realized how great of an impact we had, and continue to have on the world
around us. Noticing the unawareness (and lack of concern in other cases) in
many people about the human impact on our planet made me realize that this is a
problem that needs to be resolved. This is the reason I initially started my
pursuit for a degree in Comprehensive Environmental Geography.
After better understanding the environmental part of
geography I was introduced to the human aspect. This only furthered my interest
in geography. If there’s one thing I learned, it’s that everything is
interconnected. Human geography is most certainly connected to environmental
geography, and exploring this cause and effect relationship is an important
facet of my study. Thinking spatially is a must have skill in this discipline,
and with the help of Geographic Information System (GIS) I can visually display
these spatial connections.
